John Lennon: Imagine

Imagine a avut lansarea ca single la o luna dupa cea a albumului cu acelasi nume în SUA. De-a lungul timpului a fost considerat cel mai bun produs din cariera individuală a lui John Lennon, iar el însuşi considera melodia la fel de bună ca orişicare piesă din perioada Beatles.

Tema centrală a cântecului a fost lansată de către Cloud Piece, într-un scurt poem apărut în volumul Grapefruit a lui Yoko Ono, apărut în 1964. Cuvintele au fost reproduse pe coperta a doua a volumului Imagine. Într-un interviu din 1980 cu David Sheff pentru revista Playboy. Lennon remarcă despre conţinutul mesajului Imagine:

Sheff: On a new album, you close with „Hard Times Are Over (For a While)”. Why?
Lennon: It’s not a new message: „Give Peace a Chance” — we’re not being unreasonable. Just saying „give it a chance.” With „Imagine” we’re asking, „can you imagine a world without countries or religions?” It’s the same message over and over. And it’s positive.

Ono a arătat că versurile cântecului reprezintă exact ceea ce John credea: că umnanitatea reprezintă o singură ţară, o singură lume, un singur popor. În plus, conţinutul lui Imagine a fost inspiraţional pentru apariţia conceptului Nutopia: The Country of Peace, creat în 1973. În cartea Lennon in America, scrisă de către Geoffrey Giuliano, Lennon comenta că Imagine a fost conceput ca fiind antireligios, antinaţionalist, anticonvenţional, anticapitalist dar că, din cauza învelişului său comercial, cântecul a fost acceptat.
