Crin Antonescu supports Guy Verhofstadt as President of the European Commission

Today Crin Antonescu , President of the Romanian Senate and leader of the National Liberal Party (PNL),  second largest party in Romania, expressed his support for Guy Verhofstadt as the best candidate for President of the European Commission in 2014.

In a letter addressed to the ALDE Party President, Graham Watson, Crin Antonescu voiced his conviction that Guy Verhofstadt as a committed Liberal, a true European and a tough campaigner is the one able to conduct a successful campaign, to promote European values and best serve the interests of European citizens in decisive and challenging times for Europe.

We need nothing more and nothing less than an offensive, optimistic and united campaign – for a Europe more just, for a Europe more liberal. In order to ensure that our Union is more efficient, more democratic, and delivers for its citizens, the ALDE Party needs a top liberal candidate that will fight for such a Europe, he said.

Guy Verhofstadt, current president of the ALDE Group in the European Parliament and former Prime Minister of Belgium, officially declared his candidacy at the ALDE Party Congress in London last week.
