Some will argue that the United States has a moral obligation to support whatever the Ukrainian leaders demand since “they know best.” No, they do not know best what is in the security interests of the American people, and that should be the primary concern of any American government. They also, under the stress of war, may not be the best judges of their own ultimate security interests.
The war in Ukraine isn’t just a conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov recently declared. It is a “proxy war” in which the world’s most powerful military alliance, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, is using Ukraine as a battering ram against the Russian state. Lavrov is one of the most reliable […]
Kiev will try and take Kherson before end of the year. Russia is trying to hold the city with its back against the river, which is not a good position. It seems Kiev has sent reinforcements from all over Ukraine, including Kharkiv, toward Kherson. They know that if they take the city, it’ll be almost impossible for the Russians to retake it back afterwards. The Ukrainians would be able to fortify the town using the Dnieper river as a wet moat.
For Ukrainian and Russian military planners, the clock is ticking. Already, rainy fall weather is bringing muddy conditions that are starting to limit the mobility of tanks and other heavy equipment.
Autumnal mud is coming. And then winter. And with it, 200,000 to 300,000 Russian reservists.
